11 Best San Diego Food Delivery Services from Restaurants

11 Best San Diego Food Delivery Services from Restaurants

For the last few years, between leading over 40 team members and reporting results to my clients, I haven’t had much time for cooking.

Even now, when the whole world is on pause, I’m still going full force.

Luckily, out here in San Diego, my team and I have been using some food delivery companies that have been doing excellent work.

As we said, there are lots of companies that do food delivery in San Diego, but our favorite is UberEats. We believe that they’re the best for takeouts.

Besides, they also have the best delivery fee.

Apart from UberEats, another delivery company that’s right up there is DoorDash

If you need food delivered during this COVID-19 crisis, they’re the best picks for you.

Why use Uber Eats for Takeouts?

Just keeping it real, the food delivery niche in San Diego wouldn’t be where it is today if Uber Eats hadn’t set a standard. Before they started operating here back in 2014, I remember using many delivery companies that had me wait for hours to get my food. Thankfully, now I don’t have that issue.

Every time I use Uber Eats, I get my food delivered hot and on time.

Without fail.

I kid you not.

I’ve used them for takeouts for Mexican food, Italian dishes, brunch waffles and so much more. I have always gotten my order within the estimated timeframe.

They’re more active than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic, so if anyone’s looking to order, Uber Eats is a classic.

Why is DoorDash so Great?

Honorable mention needs to go to DoorDash, another food delivery company that a fellow growth marketer introduced me to a couple of years ago.

I checked them out and learned that they had interesting add-on services, like their DashPass subscription program.

One time, I ordered tacos and used them just to test their delivery services and it was great.

Over the years, I’ve watched them grow and must admit that they’ve made quite an impression on me.

I still believe that Uber Eats reigns supreme when it comes to food delivery in San Diego just for the simple fact that they’re more well known.

That said, when it comes to pure service, DoorDash is right up there with the greatest of them all.

In case you’re interested in learning about other food delivery companies in San Diego that are doing well, here’s a short list of them.

15 Best Food Delivery Services in San Diego

1. Uber Eats

Uber Eats is a food ordering and delivery digital platform based in San Francisco, California. Launched in 2014 by the parent company Uber, founders Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick are the ones who built Uber Eats to what it is today: uber-successful. They deliver billions of dollars worth of food every year. Part of the reason for their success is that they have a standard delivery fee of $4.99 that covers large distances. Therefore, people don’t have to worry too much about delivery fees being jacked up because they live in far places. Use Uber Eats to get your food delivered on time and for a fair price during this global pandemic.

2. DoorDash

DoorDash is another Cali-based company with headquarters in San Francisco that specializes in food delivery. The business was founded in June 2013 by students at the University of Stanford. They operate throughout San Diego and deliver everything. I’ve ordered Thai, sushi, BBQ, burritos, and even ice cream from them, and every time they deliver, the service is great. What’s more, they recently added some epic virtual backgrounds and playlists to mimic diners’ experience at restaurants like McDonald's and the Cheesecake Factory. Without a doubt, one of the best for food delivery in San Diego: try them out today.

Honorable Mentions

3. PostMates

PostMates is a local delivery company that operates in over 2,900 cities in the U.S., San Diego included. They’ve been around from as early as 2011. Unlike other companies that do food pickup and delivery exclusively, PostMates has extended their services to do pickups and delivery for groceries from local stores. This is ideal for people who want whole meals or ingredients to prepare food that isn’t available in restaurants, like fresh vegetables, fruits, and even ramen.

4. GrubHub

GrubHub is one of the largest companies in the United States that provides a food ordering and delivery marketplace as a service. They’ve also been around for a long time, having been founded in 2004. Since then, they’ve been one of the leading food delivery companies in the States. They’ve also branched out with subsidiaries such as Eat24, LevelUp, and Seamless. Check out their services and their other food delivery subsidiaries to learn more about them. Lots of steakhouses, bistros, and pizzeria partner with GrubHub, so if this is up your alley, give them a try.

5. Seamless

Similar to GrubHub, Seamless is a company that has a longstanding presence in the food delivery and takeout marketplace. They provide their customers with a host of mobile apps that they can use to order their food via their company. Following a merger in 2013, Seamless is now a subsidiary under GrubHub, along with other delivery entities. Be sure to look up their delivery fees to see if they are a good option for you based on where you’re located.

6. Delivery.com

Delivery.com is another popular food delivery company that has been a pioneer in delivering consistent and solid service since it launched in 1995. Over 1 million users are in their marketplace. The platform hosts over 12,000 restaurants as well as several grocery stores, wine and liquor stores. I know quite a number of people here in San Diego who have used Delivery.com to deliver their favorite meals. Check out their delivery fees. There are some San Diego restaurants offering free delivery on your order if you use Delivery.com, so be sure to choose the right one.

7. BuffetGo

Although BuffetGo isn’t one of the most popular delivery companies here in San Diego, their story is incredible. The marketplace partners with restaurants that have freshly cooked excess food that they would ordinarily dispose of. Instead of throwing it away, they package it and deliver it to people for next to no cost. If you're a healthy eater, there are lots of gluten-free vegan options as well. It's also common for them to deliver seafood or 'comida del mar', as they say in Spanish. BuffetGo is doing a tremendous job when it comes to fighting climate change and avoiding food wastage.

8. OLIO

Along with BuffetGo, OLIO has been one of the few food delivery marketplaces that has added a humanitarian spin on the business. The company is all about preventing food waste and encouraging sharing. For that reason, they connect neighbors, food waste hero volunteers, and local restaurants to each other to share excess food. For their goodwill and charitable venture, OLIO has my support every step of the way.

9. EatStreet

EatStreet is an American company that allows users to order food online from restaurants that are located within a centralized area. That means that within the San Diego county, depending on your location, you’ll only be allowed to order restaurants that are located within your preset radius. That said, that radius is wide enough to provide you with several restaurant options, so feel free to check out their delivery fees to find out more about them.

10. Instacart

Instacart is another food marketplace that caters to residents in San Diego. Unlike most other companies, Instacart caters to people who want grocery food items as opposed to food from a restaurant. Users can sign on and order pre-cooked meals from their local grocery stores. That said, Instacart operates within a select radius. For example, if you live in Mira Mesa, the grocery stores you'll be able to access via the app will be located there and nowhere else in the state. Visit their platform to find out the stores that they can serve in your area.

11. Health Grub

Since 2006, Health Grub has been one of the few San Diego-based restaurants that prepares and delivers healthy gourmet meals. The restaurant’s chef, Marcella Marinho, infuses her Brazilian heritage into her cooking to deliver world-class meals. I’ve ordered lots of vegan and healthy meals from them and have never been disappointed. Be sure to give them a try: you won’t regret it.

Why You Should Use Food Delivery Services in San Diego

Deciding on using a food delivery service is a tough decision.

On one hand, people always say that cooking your own meals is a better and healthier choice instead of eating fast food.

After all, you are in control of what you put in your meals.

However, there is a downside to doing that, especially when you do it every day. Meal preparation is time-consuming. You can spend hours and hours preparing food.

While it’s nice to enjoy a home-cooked meal, if you’re like me, you can’t afford to be dedicating hours upon hours to cooking every day.

I’m an entrepreneur working with some of the fastest-growing SaaS companies in the world.

I can’t sacrifice hours of my day every day to prepare meals. Especially not during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Therefore, to optimize time, I use companies like Uber Eats and DoorDash.

They have a host of restaurants in San Diego that I can choose from, lots of which have healthy options. I don’t have to sacrifice my health for work.

Use Uber Eats and DoorDash to give you the time to prioritize the things that help you to fast-track your career.
